Mattresses are one of the most important things to look at when purchasing a new storage bed! Mattresses that are good quality will make you have a better nights sleep (making a real difference to your health) and will also last you longer which in the long run helps the health of your bank balance too!
There are lots of different types and sizes of mattress on the market today. Mattresses have come a long way since their introduction in the Neolithic period when they were made from piles of leaves, grass and straw probably with an animal skin over the top, that were raised off the floor in order to stay away from drafts, dirt and pests such as rats. There are now some amazing technologies that are used in today's mattresses that will make sure you have the best nights sleep possible in today's difficult quest for a healthy lifestyle! Please read on for a brief run down of the types of mattresses that we sell....
Memory foam mattresses are one of the biggest selling mattresses on the current market possibly due to their health benefits. Memory foam mattresses were designed in the late 1960's originally for the cushioning of astronauts upon launch and re entry of space missions. A little later they were used in the medical field as a superior mattress for people in hospital who had just had major surgery. A memory foam mattress helped to take the weight off of pressure points therefore aiding better blood circulation, decreasing the chance of bed sores and increasing the proper recovery of the injured person. Memory foam mattresses are even used for the recovery of multi million pound racehorses when they have injured limbs!
Latex foam mattresses were later developed as many people were getting hot on memory foam and wanted a more natural product. Latex foam comes from the rubber tree (Hevea Brasiliensis) and has superbly flexible elastic properties that makes it ideal for making mattresses. Because of the natural chemical make up of latex foam, it allows you to stay cooler and is resistant to the growth of mould, mildew and dust mites. When sourcing the substance to make a latex mattress the tree is not harmed either – a process called 'tapping' is used to collect the latex year after year, therefore making this material more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Pocket mattresses are one of the more traditional types of mattresses that we sell on the Storage Beds Direct website. Pocket springs were invented in the 1930's. These are coiled springs that are wrapped individually in cotton pockets in order for them to move freely of each other therefore offering full support on the whole of the body as they are able to mould to the bodies shape. Pocket sprung mattresses can be purchased with either traditional fillings on the top or now even with a layer of memory foam or latex foam to add to the health benefit. The most popular selling sizes for this particular style of mattress are double mattresses, king size mattresses and super king size mattresses. There is less chance of you disturbing your partner with a pocket sprung mattress as it only moves where you move.
Open coil sprung mattresses are the more cost effective to buy should you have a smaller budget. These types of mattress consist of coiled springs that are twisted together and then tied on the edges generally with a steel rod. Open coil mattresses have a tendency to feel a little firmer due to the unit being tied together. Single mattresses for children's bedrooms don't tend to last too long due to the kids jumping on the mattress or soiling in the younger years so this makes an open coil sprung mattress a great choice to go for as they don't cost the earth and can be replaced when the child grows up a little! Another popular size for this type of mattress is small double (4ft, 120cm) as they are great for guest beds!
