Headboards

Headboards have been used as a bed accessory for thousands of years! There is conclusive archaeological evidence that proves that headboards were used as far back as Egyptian times. The headboards and beds of the Pharaohs were made from ornate, expensive substances such as gold, silver and ebony. Whilst the Pharaohs beds were raised off the ground, the peasants of this era slept on the floor on top of palm leaves and made their headboards from rolled up straw!

Headboards had two purposes throughout history – the first being for warmth. A solid headboard at the back of the bed stopped drafts and cold hitting the head, therefore keeping you warmer at night. The second reason was purely as a sign of wealth. Right up to Medieval times, headboards were made to look extremely grand and ornate so that it was known that the owner was really wealthy.

Today, headboards are generally used pure and simply for creating a stylish look in the bedroom – we don't have to worry about drafts any more due to the inventions of double glazing, central heating and high loft duvets and pillows!
